Sweetest Downfall was Miss Allie Sia Alonzo's fifth novel and for a newbie writer that time, she has the potential to be a rom-com writer. Sweetest Downfall was about Penelope who hasn't experience falling in love at her age and hasn't experience the joy of first kiss. She vowed to experience those things even if she has to face her over-protective brother, Blas. Entered Third whom was the head of the rival fraternity of her brother. She fell for Third but her brother was against it from the start. Now, she was torn between Third and her brother.
Third was probably one of the contradicting hero I have ever read. Contradicting in a good way. One minute, he was like a hooligan and the next minute, he was as sweet as a bee. It was funny how Ms. Allie made a hero like Third. Since leader siya ng isang fraternity, maangas siya. If he wasn't with his frat-buddy, he was oftentimes alone. I love how Ms. Allie turned Third's character. Actually, hindi mo masasabing nagbago si Third. Sadya lamang na iba ang ugali niya kapag si Pen ang kaharap niya. Gusto ko ung pagiging macho-type niya pero mushy pala deep inside. Hahahahaha. Hindi ako na-turn off sa kacheesyhan ni Third. I swear. Nung inuumpisan kong basahin ang Sweetest Downfall, hindi ko inakala na ganun pala ang ugali ni Third. And as I read the novel, hindi ako na-disappoint kay Third kahit kaunti. His character was lovable. Kudos to Ms. Allie for this. Gusto ko ung protectiveness and sweetness niya towards Pen.
Pagdating kay Pen, ang masasabi ko lang, bagay na bagay siya kay Third. Hahahaha. Gusto ko ang pagiging pilya, makulit at cute niya in one package. I like how Ms. Allie played Pen's character well. Nag-compliment ang ugali niya sa ugali ni Third. She was a little bit spoiled and brat but I could not help but adore Pen more because of that. Siya ung hindi mo kaiinisan na heroine kahit tila isip-bata siya. Siya ung bossy in a sweet way. Kung bakit ko nasabi yan, read the novel.
Blas and Patsy: Blas was Pen's older brother and the leader of Third's rival frat while Patsy was Pen's best friend who likes Blas. Ung mga pa-simpleng hirit ni Patsy para kay Blas kahit gaano kaikli ang scenes nila ay talagang tumatak sakin. Masasabi kong magaling talagang magsingit ng mga karakter si Ms. Allie. Hindi sila ung napadaan na parang hangin na makakalimutan mo. Ung side characters niya ung characters na hahanapan mo ng story after mong basahin ang novel. Pero hindi sila ung natatabunan ang bida. Gusto ko ung pagiging suplado ni Blas at ang pagiging taklesa at makulit ni Patsy. Parang another Third-Pen love team sila. Mas masungit nga lang si Blas kaysa kay Third dahil si Third ay mushy nga. Hahahahaha.
The plot of the story was light and smooth and while reading, I could not help but fall in love with the story. The plot was simple pero maganda kasi ang pagkakalahad ni Ms. Allie ng kwento. It was funny but not to the point of it being a comedy book. It still has the right amount of romance but with a little bit of comedic scene at the sides. It seemed like I was reading a Rose Tan novel when I was reading this one. Kasi effective ang pagpapatawa ni Ms. Allie. And the innuendos... Hahahahaha.
I like the flow of the story. Hindi siya boring at hindi rin ako nabilisan sa building ng romance sa pagitan ni Third at Pen. Hindi nakakalito ang mga dialogues at hindi boring ang narrations. May ilang dialogues kasi na sa sobrang dami, minsan ay hindi mo na matukoy kung sino ba ang nagsasalita. Pero dito, tama lang siya. Every scene was worth reading. And despite the comedic relief Ms. Allie had included on the novel, it didn't lessen the romance of the story.
To be honest, the conflict was simple as well. It was solved in an instant but it could not lessen the fact that I did enjoyed reading the whole book. And that's what matters to me. I enjoyed reading it. Because that's the reason why I'm reading a book. And Ms. Allie did a great job.
In overall, Sweetest Downfall is a must read. Kung mahilig kayo sa mga romantic-comedy novels, I recommend this one. Wag kayong mag-expect ng something heavy or deeper dito dahil hindi iyon ang genre nito. Pampaganda ito ng araw. Kung gusto mong tumawa habang naiinlove sa lalaki, read this.
Isa si Miss Allie Sia Alonzo sa mga baguhang manunulat na talagang inaabangan ko ang mga gawa. Bukod sa mga light lamang ang sulatin niya ay talagang magaganda at kaabang-abang. Hindi siya boring magsulat at talagang mahuhook ka habang nagbabasa.
Favorite Scene: Ang dami kong favorite na scene pero ito ang pinakanagustuhan ko. Or pinakanatawa ako. Nung kumanta si Third ng Zombie sa ending. Ikaw na talaga, Third! Hahahahahaha.
Favorite Character: Third and Blas. Do I need to say more? =)
